Forney EDC grants incentive to new downtown gym

During a special July 20, 2017 meeting, the Forney Economic Development Corp. met and (this is the preliminary report, subject to change):


  • Approved an amendment to the facade grant for 204 W Broad St (this increases the interior renovation reimbursement amount from 3k to 5k).
    Nan Riter explained they are getting new roof and remodeling inside. Bids came in higher that expected, so are requesting the maximum amount.
    Mr. Ketteman said the board has the funds, Chmn. McBeth asked when they would begin - in about 1 month.
  • Approved a redevelopment grant for 203 E. Main St. ( maximum reimbursement of $25k )
    Mr. Ketteman said this has been a successful program; all $100k budgeted for has been allocated. Mr. McGregor said for every dollar EDC put in, getting back about 10 in private investments. Mr. Ketteman said there is money in the fund balance, and has spoken to city secretary to place the item on council agenda, if it is approved tonight.
    TreMayne Lowery talked about his journey into body-building and opening this gym (he has had other gyms), and his passion for helping dedicated athletes. He has many customers from out of town. Chmn. McBeth said the building was previously a cleaners. Mr. Lowery spoke about their plans for the interior renovations, possibly including a supplement store. He said there will be no A/C - it will be a sweaty gym. When asked about number of trainers, Mr. Lowery said trainers will rent space from him. Mr. Tayamen asked about fees - $25 / month, 5a to 10p. Chmn. McBeth asked about exterior mods - not much, unless they expand it 1200 ft. Mr. Ketteman said as it's downtown, they have no specific parking requirements. Chmn. McBeth asked about utility upgrades - all the lighting will be changed to led, stripe the parking lot, maybe paint the building.
